Dr Ranasinghe is a specialist anaesthetist trained both in Australia and New Zealand.
She began her medical career in New Zealand, graduating from The University of Auckland with her Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MbCHb) with distinction.
Dr Ranasinghe spent eight years of specialty training in anaesthesia in major tertiary trauma hospitals in Auckland and Melbourne. She undertook fellowships at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital in anaesthesia for head & neck cancer surgery, neurosurgery and regional anaesthesia (anaesthetising specific regions of the body by locating and numbing the relevant nerves with local anaesthetic to enable surgery, or as a technique of pain relief).
Dr Ranasinghe holds public appointments as a consultant anaesthetist at Eastern Health (Box Hill Hospital and its network of associated hospitals), and works in private practice predominantly at St Vincent's Hospitals, Epworth Hospitals and Francis Perry House. Her principal practice is in gynaecology & fertility surgery, orthopaedics, plastic & reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, urology, ophthalmology and endoscopy.
She enjoys her role as a teacher and mentor to those in specialist training. Dr Ranasinghe helps facilitate advanced life support and crisis management courses for other healthcare professionals.
Dr Ayantha Ranasinghe is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and a member of the Australian Medical Association and Australian Society of Anaesthetists.
